If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like “You need to eat!”

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures.

“In that occasion I said to my grandma ‘You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,” Galimberti wrote via email. “I’m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don’t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!’ This is the way my project was born!”

The project, “Delicatessen With Love”, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.

He acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.

From top to bottom:

Inara Runtule, 68, Kekava, Latvia. Silke €(herring with potatoes and cottage cheese).

Grace Estibero, 82, Mumbai, India. Chicken vindaloo.

Susann Soresen, 81, Homer, Alaska. Moose steak.

Serette Charles, 63, Saint-Jean du Sud, Haiti. Lambi in creole sauce.

The photographer’s grandmother Marisa Batini, 80, Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. Swiss chard and ricotta Ravioli with meat sauce.

Normita Sambu Arap, 65, Oltepessi (Masaai Mara), Kenya. Mboga and orgali (white corn polenta with vegetables and goat).

Julia Enaigua, 71, La Paz, Bolivia. Queso Humacha (vegetables and fresh cheese soup).

Fifi Makhmer, 62, Cairo, Egypt. Kuoshry (pasta, rice and legumes pie).

Isolina Perez De Vargas, 83, Mendoza, Argentina. Asado criollo (mixed meats barbecue).

Bisrat Melake, 60, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Enjera with curry and vegetables.

all i can say is find your niche and make sure to explore duke and its plethora of resources. and come with an open mind (diversity is a blessing)

and during o-week everyone just strikes up random conversations because everyone’s desperate for friends. pretty soon you’ll be bffs with someone lulz you can also pick out your roommate beforehand!!

some brutal honesty needed

somewhere along the lines i fell into the same self absorbency most college first years go through: “i’m having so much fun i’m learning so much this place is so great bet no one else is having as great of a time as i am,” of course i never really said this out loud i just kind of thought this smugly in the back of my head. and then someone said the very same things to me out loud and i was like jesus christ that’s probably what i sound like in my head and its so obnoxious. its an awful mindset to have.

sometimes i come back and i feel like i need to prove something to people. look at me,look at how much i’ve grown, look at what i’ve accomplished. in college you go through periods of intense personal and intellectual growth and your new friends in college know that. it’s frustrating when you go back home and you want everyone would know the new you instead of remembering the old you that you desperately wish to rid yourself of

today was my last day at home and i can’t appreciate my family enough, piling thousands of dollars at my feet wishing only for my well being. being with my family never fails to make me question how selfishly i look at my future. yet at what point should i give up my own happiness for filial piety i don’t know

so this is what life is,

a series of disappointments, successes, failures, accomplishments—love, love lost, love rekindled, and even love abandoned

Little things like overloading a semester,

challenging yourself, and learning to have faith in your own ability to rise to the occasion.

Bigger things like going back to something that’s already broken

to leave with the understanding and perspective that sometimes,

letting go is the most difficult and most painful, yet bravest thing to do.

And truly monumental things like growing enough to look at your family—your parents—as people

not as role models, breadwinners, nuisances, or the basis of whatever problems you may face,

but as people: jaded, broken, human beings trying just as hard as you to carry their faults, their mistakes along with the burden of your dreams and desires until their backs are so haunched from the weight of responsibility that they can only see the ground and how far they still have to go, instead of how far they’ve already come

to learn that with this understanding comes a sense of maturity and compassion that can’t be taught in any book or bedtime story.

so this is what it comes down to

learning to love and let someone in

only to realize when to let go

and learn to love yourself

Photo

"I used to be gold. collarbones, atomic number
79.

I think of our bodies unhinging.
Dismantling a masterpiece we
worked so hard to build with
creased hands. A workshop of
cracking spines to straighten out
the way we would slouch.

Maintenance was: drilling openings
inside each others joints, stitching
ligaments, embroidering our hopes
beneath surfaces in cryptic codes
unseen.

When I arrived I was sun. Already
sweltering inside your pores,
glazing skin in honey residue.
My promises rinsed over in drizzling
rain, marinating your bones, flooding,
breaking into the current network
of your nerves.

Often, all I have are promises.

It starts with a loud rumbling noise
from the inside out, a vicious clap of
thunder rendering breathing patterns
defenceless. An expansion of pressure
that is too close for comfort.

When I think of slipped disks,
they remind me of those stepping stones
we crossed towards the Colosseum
we had in our minds.

We hung expectations from our shoulders.

Self depreciation is a gale force wind
who knocks once, twice, strikes fragility
down with her fury—ungluing the grip
beneath my feet, begging that I get familiar
with my knees.

She says, “You’re going to have to look at
them up close if you want to learn how to assess damage.”

When I unzipped my ribcage I saw those
impressions that you’d left on my heart,
ransacked awareness told me you’d been
here, moulding yourself between my
ventricles.

Last night I set a fire,
and watched as it burn the end
of the rope that I’d been holding
to keep you
close.
”

- Lauren Flynn, “I used to be gold.” (via babyheroin)

so this is my professor for my physics class “intro to big...

so this is my professor for my physics class “intro to big questions” next semester giving a talk on “neutrons, quarks and the search for a new force of nature”

Man = person, Woman = person, and person = person. so if we can agree hitting a person is bad, it shouldn't make a difference which gender it is right?

Haha of course! Violence of any kind isn’t okay, and as I mentioned shouldn’t be treated with a double standard. I just wanted to explain why feminists take on specifically gendered violence.

hi ^_^ i have a question about feminists and everything and i just wanted to ask you because someone asked me this and it reminded me of you and youre really wise~ ok so do feminists think that hitting a woman is acceptable? because if 2 guys fight its acceptable so basically hitting a woman is acceptable too? thanks so much :)

Hi! Thank you :). That warms my heart. I’m no expert but I do have a few thoughts on this, though I don’t know if they’ll be helpful.

First, I’m not really sure what you’re asking. Are you asking why violence against women perpetrated by men is seen as a bigger deal than violence between two men? If that’s what you’re asking then….

I would say the reason we perceive violence against women as more serious is actually sexist in its own way, and is because of something called “benevolent sexism.” Because of benevolent sexism, women are seen as the weaker sex that must be protected and cherished (which has its benefits for women, such as chivalry, but is also harmful in the long run). Thus, hitting a woman is perceived as a lot more dire than hitting a man. Feminists aim to erase benevolent sexism as well, and I personally think there shouldn’t be a double standard between the two sexes, period.

I think it also ties into the whole “boys will be boys” mindset. Behavior such as getting into fights and promiscuity is often excused, and/or attributed to “biology” for males. (This is also problematic and sexist.)

So why do feminists only take up domestic violence against women as an issue? Because many feminists see violence against women as a social/cultural problem. There’s a myth that the perpetrators of domestic violence against women are somehow inherently pathological/abnormal outputs of society. It turns out only 10% of perpetrators fit that profile, and this myth covers up a deeper problem of culturally ingrained misogyny. Feminists argue that violent behavior against women is rooted in the way that we are socialized. To be honest I’m not too well versed on this, but here’s a good source I found from a quick google search (x).

“While society claims to abhor violence, we often make heroes of men who are aggressive. In the culture of masculinity, heroes are often predicated on some kind of violent action (see: any superhero movie). The traditional model of masculinity encourages men to exude an aura of daring and aggression.”

Hope I helped!

sometimes it astounds me how i spent most of my life being an ungrateful brat. why didn’t i...

sometimes it astounds me how i spent most of my life being an ungrateful brat. why didn’t i decide earlier to be an easier child to raise? only too recently did i decide i should appreciate my family properly and now it never feels like enough

haha er well embrace the long distance i guess! you’ll be really busy during college and instead of moping around/giving up opportunities to spend time with each other, throw yourself into college! if you keep yourself busy, you won’t miss the other person. plus, you don’t want to think of them as a burden who keeps you from doing what you want. just make sure at the end of the day you clear some time to talk/spend time together :P

arquerio:
